analyzing the connection between pre-islamic religious thoughts and some narrations of the prophet’s ascension (mi'raj)

Authors fattahizadeh fathieh ,shabani azamsadat
Abstract    he holy quran does not give a complete description of the prophet’s physical ascension, and mostly highlights his spiritual elevation and the observation of some divine signs, but some narrations refer to prophet’s physical ascension to the seven heavens through a winged creature called “buraq”. in these narrations, the quality of the ascension is controversial and no reference to it is found in the quran. on the other hand, these narrations date back to the third century ah, which is far from the era of the revelation of the quran. traces of some past religious thoughts are found in the content of these narrations. using the descriptive-analytical method, this article shows that the historical environment of the narrators of the hadith and the use of metaphorical and symbolic concepts to interpret the quran could have been effective in compiling such narrations. therefore, the ascension is confirmed in both past religions and islam. details of such narrations are not found in the holy quran, but these narrations somehow help us in interpreting the quran. also, the narrative texts being influenced by the texts of monotheistic religions is not a far-fetched possibility.
