کتاب تاریخ و نظریه در انسان‌‌‌شناسی نوشته ی آلن بارنارد (alan barnard)، پژوهش‌‌گر و نویسنده ی برجسته ی مطالعات انسان‌‌شناختی، به‌‌ویژه انسان‌‌شناسی آفریقای جنوبی، ازجمله آثار ارزش‌مند در حیطه ی انسان‌‌شناسی است. بارنارد در این کتاب ماهیت نظری انسان‌‌شناسی را درطول تاریخ و دربین آرای اندیشمندان و متفکران برجسته ی این علم بررسی می‌کند و ضمنِ مقایسه ی آرای اندیشمندان به ریشه‌‌یابی نظریه‌‌ها و مکاتب فکری ارائه‌‌شده در حوزه ی انسان‌‌شناسی می‌پردازد. هدف این کتاب بررسی آرای پیش‌گامان مطالعات انسان‌‌شناسی، تکامل‌‌گرایی در همه ی ابعاد آن، نظریه ی اشاعه‌‌گران درباره ی مناطق فرهنگی، کارکردگرایی و کارکردگرایی ساختاری، نظریه‌‌های عمل‌‌محور، دیدگاه‌‌های پردازشی و مارکسیستی، جوانب مختلف نسبی‌‌گرایی، ساختارگرایی و پساساختارگرایی، دیدگاه‌‌های پست‌‌مدرنیسم و تفاسیر اخیر است. این کتاب را باید مروری بر نظریه‌‌های انسان‌‌شناختی و مشکلات مرتبط با آن‌‌ها دانست، اما چون به جزئیاتِ رویکرد‌‌ها و اندیشه‌‌های نظریه‌‌پردازان نمی‌پردازد، ایجاز و اختصار عبارات و مطالب کتاب از وضوح مفهومی آن می‌‌کاهد و توضیح و تکمیل بیش‌‌‌تری را می‌‌طلبد.
