بررسی انتقادی کتاب hume’s aesthetic theory, taste and sentiment (نظریۀ زیبایی‌شناسی هیوم، ذوق و عاطفه)

کتاب نظریۀ زیبایی‌شناسی هیوم؛ ذوق و عاطفه اثر تاونزند نقطۀ عطفی در مطالعات مربوط به زیبایی‌شناسی هیوم است. تا پیش از این کتاب اغلب مفسران معتقد بودند زیبایی‌شناسی هیوم فقط در اثر دربارۀ معیار ذوق آمده است؛ اما تاونزند با بررسی معانی اصطلاحات مختلف زیباشناختی، هم‌چون ذوق و عاطفه، نشان می‌دهد که برای دست‌یابی به معنایی جامع از این مبحث علاوه‌بر اثر فوق باید به دیگر آثار هیوم چون رساله درباب طبیعت آدمی، پژوهشی در اصول اخلاق، و کاوشی در خصوص فهم بشری نیز مراجعه کرد. او هم‌چنین در ادعایی بدیع و تازه خاطرنشان می‌کند که ذوق و عاطفه بار معرفت‌شناختی دارند. اما به‌نظر می‌رسد علاقۀ زیاد تاونزند به زیبایی‌شناسی باعث ارائۀ تفسیری بحث‌برانگیز و نامانوس و نوعی بدفهمی از فلسفۀ هیوم شده است؛ زیرا او در این اثر مدعی است که زیبایی‌شناسی از نظر هیوم مهم‌ترین بخش فلسفۀ او محسوب می‌شود. این درحالی است که هیوم به‌کرات در آثار مختلف خود از ارجحیت اخلاق سخن می‌گوید. کتاب حاضر نه متنی آموزشی، بلکه بیش‌تر کوششی است برای دفاع از ایدۀ مناقشه‌برانگیز پیش‌گفته و از این طریق، ارائۀ مبسوط‌ترین تقریر ممکن از زیبایی‌شناسی هیوم.

townsend’s hume’s aesthetics theory, taste and sentiment is a critical point in hume studies. before that, hume’s commentators hold that his aesthetics was explained only in his short essay entitled as standard of taste. but townsend shows that hume’s aesthetic can be found in other works, such as a treatise of human nature, an enquiry concerning the principles of morals and an enquiry concerning human understanding. through these books, we can gain a comprehensive understanding of hume’s aesthetics. but, furthermore, he asserts that the main basis of hume’s philosophical system is his aesthetics, a claim that we found it very controversial. he also shows that concepts of taste and sentiment have an epistemological role in hume’s aesthetics. but his conclusive interest to aesthetics leads him to give a strange and misunderstanding reading of hume’s philosophy. this book could be better understood as speculation concerning hume’s philosophical system rather than instructing his aesthetics.
