چکیده    Barley (hordeum vulgare l.cv. california mariout) plants were grown hydroponically at different saline stresses (50, 100, 150 and 200mm nacl ) in addition to the control (without added nacl). the effect of each saline stress on root surface (rs) atpase activity was studied. at 50 and 100 mm nacl, (rs) atpase activity was found not to be highly affected in comparison with the control. at 150 and 200 mm nacl, there was a pronounced increase in (rs) atpase activity. anatomical study showed the acute effect of 200 mm nacl on root cells enlargement. the pronounced increase in (rs) atpase activity at 150 and 200 mm nacl was related to the adverse effects of these saline stresses on the integrity of the plasma membrane. results suggested the interaction between na+ and ca2+ bounded in the plasma membrane and in the cell wall
