Abstract
the purpose of this article is to analyze and compare the relationship between the concept of self-sacrifice and war in the views of max scheler and carl schmitt. in schmitt's political thought, war, as the most extreme political instrument, reveals apossibility that underlies every political idea, namely the distinction between friend andenemy. while in scheler's view, war is the greatest moral event that reveals the spiritualtruth of man. in scheler's philosophy, self-sacrifice to embrace war is in fact acceptinglife as a dynamic and constructive force. if we look at the subject of war in this way, sacrifice in war becomes the opening of a path to the sublime. however, for boththinkers, what distinguishes war from other competitions in life is devotion on thebattlefield. therefore, it makes no difference whether this is self-sacrificing one's life onthe battlefield based on high moral values or defending territorial interests and identity.based on these political and ethical distinctions, in this article we attempt to explain theviews of these two thinkers in this field using a descriptive-analytical method andultimately compare these two views with each other.
