|
In this paper, particle deposition in the upper airways and ve lobes of ahuman lung is simulated. the simulation is based on a stochastic lung model, derivedfrom detailed morphometric measurements. pathways are simulated using monte carlomethods; consequently the whole structure changes both stochastically and statisticallyin each simulation. in this investigation the termination phenomena is a function of eachdaughter's diameter which best satises the lung's morphometry. complementary to theprevious available assumptions, i.e. ow divisions according to the ratio of daughter'scross sections or distal volumes, in this investigation ow rates are computed in an upwardmanner starting from the acini (where suction occurs), following to trachea. regionalexpansion and contraction coecients of acinar airways are taken into account in the airowdistribution analysis. regional and total deposition fractions in the human respiratorysystem are computed by astochastic lung deposition model in a full breathing cycle. thesefractions are computed in the upper airways as well as the above mentioned stochastic lunginstead of a pre-dened lung structure. the eects of brownian motion, inertial impactionand gravitational sedimentation are simulated in particle deposition analysis in respiratoryairways using analytical equations.
