astrotheology: an analysis of the relationship between extraterrestrial life and human superiority in the order of creation

Authors ramin farah
Abstract    this study examines whether accepting the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial beings is incompatible with the belief that human beings are the “noblest of creatures.” it argues that the qur'an contains no explicit statement on this issue, while its interpretive openness allows for philosophical, mystical, and theological approaches. drawing on philosophical concepts such as the theory of emanation, the multiplicity of levels of existence, and proportionality between cause and effect, the study maintains that the existence of multiple worlds and diverse forms of life is possible and consistent with the structure of the cosmos. from a mystical perspective, based on the manifestation of the divine name al-ḥayy (the living), life cannot be restricted to terrestrial humanity and must appear in various forms across different realms. the study also examines qur'anic verses and narrations referring to the plurality of worlds and conscious beings as indications supporting the possibility of extraterrestrial life. it further addresses differing views on whether humans or angels are the noblest of creatures, showing that humanity’s absolute superiority lacks definitive textual proof and is largely a philosophical–theological interpretation. finally, it concludes that if extraterrestrial beings possess intellect, free will, and moral capacity, their existence does not undermine human dignity and may open new horizons in islamic theology.
