Abstract
religious transformation entails a profound shift in an individual's identity, values, and rational frameworks, characterized by two essential features: the inability to fully anticipate its consequences prior to its occurrence, and a fundamental restructuring of one's personal and epistemic constitution thereafter. this renders the decision to engage in such an experience paradoxical - a context in which traditional rationality proves inadequate, while volition and epistemic courage gain prominence. within this process, the question of validity arises between the former and the nascent self; yet neither can be deemed unconditionally superior. an internal rational dialogue, rooted in social and intersubjective norms, offers a means of navigating this divide. augustine’s account in the confessions, for instance, illustrates that inner conflict with the prior self does not signify rupture, but rather an opportunity to deepen rationality and reconstruct self-understanding. thus, rationality in the religious domain does not entail resistance to change, but the capacity to grow through it.
