the platonic legacy and the eclipse of revelatory views of the soul in early christian theology

Authors khosravani hamid
Abstract    this article examines the introduction and impact of the philosophical doctrine of the soul’s immortality, derived from the platonic tradition, on early christian theology concerning human nature, death, and the afterlife. by analyzing terms such as nephesh in hebrew and psyche in greek, it is shown that scripture presents humanity as a unified and mortal being whose existence depends on the impartation of life from god, whereas plato regarded the soul as independent and eternal. the writings of the church fathers reveal that under the influence of greek philosophy, concepts of death, resurrection, and final judgment were reinterpreted, and immortality came to be understood as an inherent quality of the soul. this development reshaped the perception of divine justice and mercy within christian theology.
