the possibility of prophethood and the serial unity of existence: a way out of deism

Authors eskandari reza
Abstract    in this paper, i argue that differential and analogical interpretations of tashkīk (the gradation of being) concerning the relation between al-ḥaqq (the creator) and the created world inevitably lead to deism. the deistic outlook denies divine providence and, consequently, renders the very principle of prophethood meaningless. by examining the various modes of distinction recognized in islamic philosophy, i show that only the interpretation grounded in the sariyānī unity of existence can provide a genuine alternative to deism. for the sariyānī unity conceives of being as continuous and all-pervasive—from the creator to creation—and on this basis, the possibility of revelation and the sending of prophets becomes intelligible. thus, the affirmation of the sariyānī unity of existence serves as a necessary precondition for the realization of prophethood within islamic philosophy.
Keywords pervasive unity of being (waḥdat siryāniyya) ,deism ,ontological disjunction (tabāyun) ,generic unity (waḥdat sinḵiyya) ,gradation of being (tashkīk al-wujūd)
