formal maturity in the thought of mullā ṣadrā

Authors wakili hadi ,kaviani mohammad
Abstract    formal maturity constitutes a distinct stage in the soul’s developmental trajectory within transcendent theosophy (hikmat al-mutaʿaliyah), articulated against the background of the soul’s bodily origination and its intensive movement. ṣadr al-mutaʿallihīn presents this stage as a sequence of transformations in the soul’s mode of being, marking the onset of several key features: marked imaginal abstraction, the emergence of the rational soul (naṭiqah), the actualization of the practical intellect, the theoretical intellect remaining in potentiality, a transformation in the soul’s mode of attachment to the body, perfection-conferring voluntary action, and the acquisition of a capacity for spiritual maturity. defending this account within the framework of hikmat al-mutaʿaliyah faces several challenges, including how the rational soul arises prior to the actualization of the theoretical intellect; how the practical intellect can be actualized before the theoretical intellect; how the soul’s attachment to the body is transformed; and the precise relations among formal maturity, spiritual maturity, and juridical-religious (sharīʿa) maturity. using an analytical-deductive method grounded in the principles of transcendent theosophy, this study argues that the rational soul is actualized with intense imaginal abstraction together with a rudimentary practical intellect and a theoretical intellect suffused with imagination; through perfection-conferring voluntary action it thereby provides the conditions for movement toward spiritual maturity. this new actuality of the soul is effected in a manner that alters the quality of its relation to the body.
