پل تیلیش، معتقد بود نحوۀ مواجهۀ انسان با امر الوهی تعیین‌کنندۀ سرنوشت این مواجهه است. نزد او پرسش از خداوند، به‌تعبیری وام‌گرفته از هایدگر، نه پرسش از هستی و نیستی یک موجود در میان موجودات بلکه پرسش از خود وجود است. تفسیر تیل از وحی یش که با تمایز میان نشانه و نماد بنیاد می‌شود، نشانه را به‌مثابۀ نشان‌گری صرف برای دلالت بر امر خارجی، و نماد را به‌عنوان مشارک در تولید معنای امر معرفی می‌کند. تیلیش ادعا می‌کند که‌ ادبیات در قرن بیستم نقشی به‌سزا در نمادگذاری معانی امر وحیانی داشته است، اما در عین حال نمی‌خواهد متون دینی را به استعاره‌هایی صرف فروکاهد.
