بعد از پیدایی و رشد مطالعات زیستی-دینی، ژنتیک رفتاری و علم ژنتیک مولکولی، زمین و ساحت دیگری تعریف و در نتیجه برای شناخت این دسته از مسائل از جمله منشاء دین‌ورزی، محققان به سراغ دانش بیولوژی و عصب‌شناسی رفته و در راستای کند و کاو پیرامون عامل گرایش‌های دینی ، عواملی از جمله vmat2 موسوم به «ژن خدا» را آدرس می دهند. تمرکز تلاش این دسته، ارائه نقشه کامل باورهای مذهبی بر مکانیزم‌های مغزی و سیستم عصبی آن بوده و اساسا پایه ژنتیکی را برای آن مکانیزم‌های مغزی ارائه می‌دهند. در این راستاست که آنان مارکرهای ژنتیکی و هوش معنوی (sq) را در کنار دیگر هوش‌های بشری معرفی و بر این باورند که پایه های عصبی استعلایی معنوی نیز بر ساخته صرف از این بنیاد ها هستند.پیش‌فرض رایج بر این است که این نوع مطالعات به دلیل اتخاذ رویکردهای تجربی، تکاملی و فرگشتی کاملا ضددینی و یا لااقل مبتلا به مشکل تقلیل‌گرایی است با این وجود، کوشش این خامه بر آن است تا نشان دهد که التزام به تنکردشناسی (فیزیولوژیک) دینی و فرگشت مغزی‌، می‌تواند بستری را برای پاسخ به انتقادات پوزیتویستی بر ادیان نیز فراهم نماید.
