Comparison the Effect of Teaching of SBAR Technique with Role Play and Lecturing on Communication Skill of Nurses

Introduction: ineffective communication is a main factor inengender of unwanted hospital errors and impede suitable patient care.sbar technique (situationbackground- assessment- recommendation) is astandard tool for building communication among healthcare professionals.while educating the sbar technique requires appropriate educationalmethods, but this issue has been less investigated. so, the aim ofpresent study was to compare the effect of educating the sbar techniquewith role play and lecturing on communication skills of nurses intransferring patients to next shift. methods: this quasi-experimentalstudy conducted by participating 78 nurses who assigned to role play andlecturing groups randomly. sbar technique was educated to each groupseparately. at the end of the learning session in each group, the skillsof the participants in performing sbar technique were investigated bythe standard sbar scale. data analysis was performed by using spssstatistical software version 11.5. results: comparison the total scoreof performing sbar technique using independent samples t-test showedstatistical differences between mean score of role play and lecturinggroups. similarly, comparison the scores of skill in performing eachfour parts of sbar technique showed statistical differences between twogroups. conclusion: role play is an effective educational method inteaching sbar technique for nurses and it can be used as a tool forbuild effective communication between healthcare professionals.
