دربارۀ مسالۀ رابطۀ بدون مربوط

یکی از مشکلات فراراهِ واقع‌گرایی ساختاری هستی‌شناختی حذف‌گرا مسالۀ رابطۀ بدون مربوط است: از یک‌سو، مطابقِ این نوع واقع‌گرایی، جهان صرفاً از ساختارها و روابط قوام یافته و تهی از اشیاء منفرد است، و از سوی دیگر، مطابق با فهم برآمده از ریاضیات، ساختارها و روابط به اشیاء منفرد به‌مثابۀ مربوط تکیه دارند. استیون فرنچ در مقام مدافع این نوع واقع‌‌گرایی چنین پاسخ می‌دهد که فرضِ وابستگی رابطه به مربوط به منبع بازنمایی باز می‌گردد، در حالی‌که واقع‌گرایی فوق مدعی‌ست که رابطه در هدف بازنمایی موجودی خودایستاست. در این مقاله نشان داده خواهد شد که این پاسخ همراه با نظر وی در مورد معناشناسی جملاتِ ظاهراً ناظر بر اشیاء منفرد نامنسجم است.

On the Problem of Relation without Relata

The claim that there can be relations without relata, submitted by the radical ontic structural realist, mounts a serious challenge to her: on the one hand, the world is constituted, according to this sort of realism, just by structures and relations, and on the other hand, relations depend, mathematics says, on individual objects as relata. To resolve the problem, Steven French has argued that while the dependency of relations on relata is conceivable concerning the structure associated with the source of representation, radical ontic structural realism assumes the existence of relations devoid of relata regarding the target of representation. In this article, I will argue this solution considered together with his semantics for the sentences that contain terms referring apparently to individual objects seems incoherent.
