به همان اندازه که برآمدن و ظهور قدرت ها در عرصه جهانی امری طبیعی است، افول و فرود آن‌ها نیز امری طبیعی است. عوامل متعددی بسته به نوع قدرت برتری در این صعود و افول نقش دارند؛ جنگ، اقتصاد، هزینه‌های ناشی از ابرقدرت بودن، سیاست‌های جهانی، افول ایدئولوژی ها و مواردی از این دست از مهمترین دلایل این افول هستند. ایالات متحده آمریکا که دوران صعود در عرصه جهانی را از قرن نوزدهم آغاز کرده بود، پس از پایان جنگ سرد و با فروپاشی اتحاد جماهیر شوروی، به عنوان یک قدرت هژمون در عرصه بین‌الملل شناخته شد. با این وجود از همان زمان نشانه هایی مبنی بر افول این قدرت نیز قابل مشاهده بود. مطالعات نشان داده که ایالات متحده از نظر شاخص‌های سیاسی همانند دمکراسی، حقوق بشر، قدرت نرم (آموزش، تحصیلات تکمیلی و تعداد دانشجویان خارجی،کمک به کشورهای کمتر برخوردار و...)، قدرت نظامی(بودجه نظامی و هزینه‌های نظامی قدرت‌های رقیب) ، قدرت اقتصادی و سایر شاخص های برتری هژمونیک، فاصله اش با سایر رقبای جهانی در حال کاهش است. مقاله حاضر درصدد است عوامل سیاسی اقتصادی این کشور که منجر به افول اقتصادی را بررسی نموده. سوال اصلی ما این است که عوامل موثر سیاسی اقتصادی افول هژمون آمریکا کدامند؟ روش این مقاله کیفی از نوع توصیفی تحلیلی است که از منابع اسنادی و کتابخانه ای برای پاسخ به سوال اصلی بهره می برد.
