امویان اندلس در اروپای غربی تاریخی به وجود آوردند که دارای خصوصیات متمایز با گذشته آنها است . مغرب زمین طی قرون میانه با تمدن اسلامی مراوده داشته است و تحت تاثیر فرهنگ اسلامی قرار گرفتند و سپس با شناخت از فرهنگ اسلامی به مرور حکومت اسلامی را تحت تاثیر خود قرار داد .در کنار عواملی چون آشنایی اروپاییان با مراکز علمی مسلمانان، رشد اقتصادی، رونق شهر نشینی وزمینه سازی مدارس موجود در کلیسا ها و دیر ها، ترجمه کتاب های عربی به زبان لاتین نیز از عوامل مهم رشد شگفت انگیز دانشگاه های اروپایی، بود. از عوامل موثر در ظهور و تثبیت تمدنی، می تواند خود را در قالب کاربرد زبان مشترک نشان دهد. در دوران سیطره فرهنگ اسلامی در اندلس، علاوه بر زبان عربی، که زبان رسمی نهادهای آموزشی و حکومتی بود، زبان لاتینی نیز، در کلیساها و نظامات اداری محلی به کار می رفت.
