Prévalence hospitalière de la lithiase urinaire à l'hôpital militaire Moulay Ismail (Meknès-Maroc) [Prevalence of urinary lithiasis in the Moulay Ismail Military Hospital (Meknes-Morocco)]

To determine the hospital prevalence of urolithiasis in the moroccan population. a retrospective study in the urology department of the moulay ismail military hospital (mimh) for a period of four years from july 2004 to july 2008. the results of this study were extracted from the collected data records and hospital records: gender,age,entry diagnosis,discharge diagnosis. of 3043 hospitalized patients in the urology department,772 (25,36%) underwent surgery for urolithiasis including 185 women (23,97%) and 587 men (76,03%). the epidemiological profile of this stone disease shows a male predominance (sex ratio m/f=3.1) (p<0,001). it occurs most often in patients aged between 40 and 60 years. the average age of patients was 47,1±15,5 years (range 5 to 82 years). the upper urinary system lithiasis is identifiedin 87,8% of cases,while 12,18% of the cases have bladder stones (p<0,0001). the left side was moreaffected by the calculations (60,02% of cases),against only 35,84% of the right side,while 4,5% of cases have bilateral stones. according to the techniques used for stone extraction,almost half (49,48%) patients have been treated by percutaneous nephrolithotomy (pcnl),the rest was treated with ureteroscopy,extracorporeal lithotripsy (ecl) and surgeries.this study allowed us to show that urolithiasis is responsible for more hospitalizations in urology services and remains the most common disease compared with other urological diseases.
