Valorization of Ruta montana and Ruta chalepensis: Ethnobotanical study,phytochemical screening and antibacterial activity [Valorisation de Ruta montana et Ruta chalepensis: Etude ethnobotanique,Screening phytochimique et pouvoir antibactérien]

Ruta sp. commonly named awermi and fijel in moroccan country was subject to ethno botanic investigation with 58 traditional medicine practitioners in meknes region. then,prospecting field was undertaken to collect,identify the different species of ruta sp. occurring in meknes region which were submitted to chemical screening then to essential oil extraction through hydro distillation and splitting plant by soxlhet. the essential oil and plants extracts were tested for eventual antibacterial activity against four strains from staphylococcus aureus,proteus mirabilis,klebsiella pneumoniae and escherichia coli. results showed that ruta sp. has therapeutic virtues; it's using in dermatologic,respiratory and oral affections (fidelity indice about 43,1%); leaves and root are the only used plant parts ( 100%; 96%) as decoction and poultices (100%). two species were identified,ruta chalepensis l. and ruta montana (l) l. also,phytochemical screening revealed presence of alkaloids,combined anthracenic,sterols,triterpenes with qualitative difference between the two ruta species. elsewhere,there was no effect on klebsiella pneumoniae and escherichia coli growth neither of essential oil nor of plant extracts whereas the best inhibitory effect was obtained on s. aureus with r.montana essential oil as well as with r. chalepensis decoction.
