Inefficient disinfection of the water distribution system and cross-contamination may result in the occurrence of microorganisms in hospital clean waters. such microorganisms can be pathogenic and may contaminate hospital devices and materials,and therefore pose a risk for the nursing body and hospitalized patients health. as part of actions to prevent nosocomial infections,we monitored different types of water used during a four-month period at eight services in a hospital in the city of fez. the main objectives were to assess the microbial water quality,to evaluate the effectiveness of the disinfection applied to the water distribution channels as well as the sensitivity of isolated bacteria to antibiotics and disinfectants. microbial analysis of water from different sources exceeded the acceptability limits of recommended standards. the bacterial species found in water include lactobacillus,bacillus sp.,aeromonas salmonicida,bnonnf,coagulase negative staphylococcus,pasteurella haemolytica,acinitobacter sp bnop,aeromonas hydrophila,streptococcus sp. this shows that some of these may cause nosocomial infections. the disinfectant used in pure form in this hospital was effective against certain bacterial strains such as aeromonas hydrophila,coagulase-negative staphylococcus,streptococcus sp and bacillus sp. however,no effect was seen against pasteurella haemolytica and lactobacillus. furthermore,all the tested bacteria were resistant to diluted disinfectant. aeromonas hydrophila and streptococcus sp strains showed resistance to most antibiotics investigated at the exception of ofloxacin and amikacin. in addition,aeromonas hydrophila was found to be sensitive to chloramphenicol.
