از آل‌عثمان تا امپراتوری عثمانی؛ نام‌شناسی تاریخ‌نگارانه

در متون مطالعاتی کنونی با وجود این که اغلب تعبیر «امپراتوری عثمانی» برای اشاره به عثمانیان رواج بیشتری دارد، نوعی از آشفتگی دربارۀ نام این سلسلۀ مسلمان به چشم می‌خورد، به‌ویژه اینکه این عنوان منطبق با منابع دورۀ عثمانی نیست. این بدین معنی می‌تواند باشد که تجدیدنظر جدی در این زمینه الزامی است. بررسی متون تاریخ‌نگارانه، تالیفات تاریخی و منابع روزگار عثمانیان نشان می‌دهد که با اتکا بر الگوهای رایج در نام‌گذاری دولت‌های اسلامی، «آل‌عثمان» نام رایج این سلسله در ادوار تاریخ این سلسله بود. به دنبال تبدیل بیلیک عثمانی به دولت عثمانی، در آثار تاریخی و منابع از نیمۀ دوم قرن هشتم هجری، تعبیر «دولت عثمانیه» نیز رواج یافت. در این میان، در منابع و نگاشته‌های فارسی و در مواردی ترکی عثمانی نام «عثمانیان» نیز به چشم می‌خورد. با این اوصاف، در ادوار متاخر روزگار عثمانی، «دولت عَلّیۀ عُثمانیه» برای نامیدن این سلسلۀ کهن‌سال در متون و منابع تاریخی برای این دولت کاربرد بیشتری داشت و در اسناد و نشان‎های رسمی‌‌حکومتی نیز بیشتر به کار رفته است. این عنوان به‌احتمال زیاد در معنایی مترادف تعبیر «امپراتوری عثمانی» در آثار تاریخی غربی‌‌اروپایی است که اغلب به‌صورت آگاهانه از به‌کاربردن آن خودداری می‌شد؛ ازاین‌رو، به نظر می‌رسد با احتراز از به‌کارگیری «امپراتوری عثمانی»، استفاده از نام «دولت عثمانی» برای این دولت در مطالعات کنونی عنوان متناسب و صحیح‌تری باشد.

from āl-iot̲h̲mān to the ottoman empire: historiographical nomenclature

in current studies and texts, although the term “ottoman empire” is more commonly used to refer to the ottomans, there seems to be some confusion about the name of this muslim dynasty, especially since this title does not align with sources from the ottoman period. this can mean that a serious reconsideration in this area is necessary. examination of historical texts, historical writings, and ottoman-era sources indicates that based on common naming patterns in islamic states, the name “āl-iot̲h̲mān” was prevalent for this dynasty throughout its history. following the transformation from ottoman beylik to the ottoman state, the term “dewlat-i ot̲h̲māniyyah” also became popular in historical works and sources from the second half of the 8th century after hijrah. additionally, in persian sources and sometimes in ottoman turkish, the name “ot̲h̲māniyān” is also visible. however, in later periods of the ottoman era, the term “dewlat-i ālīyyah ot̲h̲māniyyah” was more commonly used in historical texts and sources to refer to this ancient dynasty, and it was more prevalent in official documents and government insignia. this title likely corresponds to the meaning of “ottoman empire” in western historical works, where its use was often deliberate. therefore, it seems that using “dewlat-i ot̲h̲māniyyah/ottoman state” instead of “ottoman empire” in current studies would be a more appropriate and accurate designation.
