Polycystic ovary syndrome (pcas) is a genetically based disorder which reflects multiplepotential aetiologies and variable clinical presentations. it is clearly a heterogeneoussyndrome, and current proposed diagnostic criteria include a number of disorders with similarphenotypes but radically different aetiologies. the lack of well-defined diagnostic criteriamakes identification of pcas confusing to many clinicians and seriously delayed theclarification of its genetics, aetiology, clinical associations and assessment of treatment. thereis no universally accepted clinical definition for pcas. in this review the genetic causes anddiagnosis criteria of pcas will be discussed.
