The Role of Audio-Visual Aids in General English Classes At Medical University: Reading Comprehension, Attitude, and Motivation

The general consensus on the invaluable contributions of audio-visual materials based on cognitive theory of multimedia learning (ctml) to enhancing the quality of language classes has turned them into indispensable tools which teachers utilize for more effective teaching of different language skills. the primary aim of this study was to explore the effect of audio visual aids on reading skill at university level. the secondary aim was to find out if this change in materials could have any impact on the motivation and attitudes of the students toward english learning. to this end, this quasi-experimental study adopted a pre-test post-test research method. a total of 256 general english university students were divided to experimental (n=184) and control (n=81) groups. the experimental group received audio-visual aids as the treatment while the control group was taught by a conventional text-based method, commonly practiced in general english classes at tabriz university of medical sciences (tums). the reading section of preliminary english test (pet) and gardner’s attitude and motivation test battery (amtb) were used for data collection. the results of independent samples t-test and mann-whitney tests revealed that the students provided with audio-visual materials obtained greater reading outcomes and also showed more positive attitudes and higher motivation toward english learning. thus, our research revealed that the higher productivity and livelihood of reading classes can be tangible even in the in the narrow space of a single university semester, and we therefore recommend audio-visual tools should be employed more extensively at university to heighten the quality of their teaching and students’ reading comprehension.

نقش ابزارهای کمکی دیداری-شنیداری در کلاسهای زبان انگلیسی عمومی در دانشگاه علوم پزشکی: درک مطلب، نگرش و انگیزه

توافق عمومی در خصوص کمک بسیار ارزشمند ابزارهای دیداریشنیداری بر اساس نظریه آموزش چند رسانه ای در ارتقا کیفیت کلاسهای زبان، این ابزارها را به عناصر ضروری تدریس تبدیل کرده است که مدرسین زبان برای تدریس موثر مهارتهای مختلف زبانی از آنها بهره می جویند. هدف اصلی مطالعه حاضر بررسی تاثیرابزارهای دیداریشنیداری روی مهارت خواندن در سطح دانشگاه بود. هدف دوم عبارت بود از اینکه آیا تغییر مواد آموزشی به این شکل روی انگیزه و نگرش دانشجویان تاثیر گذار است. بدین منظور، این مطالعه از رویکرد تحقیقی پیش آزمون پس آزمون استفاده نموده است. در مجموع 256 دانشجوی کلاسهای زبان عمومی به دو گروه کنترلی (81) و آزمایشی (184) تقسیم شدند. آموزش گروه آزمایشی با استفاده از ویدیوها و فایل های صوتی مرتبط به متون صورت گرفت در حالیکه گروه کنترل با استفاده از روش مرسوم مبتنی به متن آموزش داده شدند. بخش درک مطلب آزمون PET و تست انگیزه و نگرش گاردنر به عنوان ابزار جمع آوری داده مورد استفاده قرار گرفتند. نتایج تست های آماری نشان دادند که دانشجویان گروه آزمایشی نتایج بهتری در آزمون درک مطلب کسب کردند و همینطور نگرش مثبت تر و انگیزه بالاتری از خود به نمایش گذاشتند. بنابراین توصیه می شود که ابزارهای دیداریشنیداری بطور گسترده تری توسط مدرسین زبان عمومی مورد استفاده قرار گیرند تا کیفیت آموزشی و درک مطلب فراگیران ارتقا یابد.
