a pragmatic analysis of personal metadiscourse and politeness principle across genres: from relevance to adaptation

This study investigated personal metadiscourse units across genres. based on ädel’s (2006) taxonomy of the discourse functions of personal metadiscourse and leech’s (2014) grand strategy of politeness, three spoken genres were compared in terms of the use of personal metadiscourse functions and politeness maxims. to that end, a 3,034,025 word corpus consisting of panel discussion in politics, interviews with actors, and comedies genres, which included 30 audio and video transcriptions, was developed. explicitness, world of discourse, current discourse, speaker qua speaker and listener qua listener were used to identify metadiscourse units. we examined the total frequencies of all personal metadiscourse units used in the corpus. the results of corpus analysis showed that 19.6% of metadiscourse units occurred in comedies, which was the highest among the three genres. the most commonly used metadiscourse units appeared in speakeroriented metadiscourse with 10.2% in interviews. the results also revealed that in panel discussion the speakers focused more on their own ideas than the listeners or participants. results of chisquare analysis showed that english speakers used speaker-oriented, participant-oriented, and listener-oriented metadiscourse types statistically significantly differently. a statistically significant difference between speaker, participant, and listener-oriented units was found. results also revealed that speakers in different genres are willing to use such maxims as opinion reticence and modesty more frequently than other maxims. the paper concludes with proposing a new model for analyzing metadiscourse.

تجزیه و تحلیل عملی فراگفتمان شخصی و اصل ادب در ژانرها: از ارتباط تا سازگاری

این مطالعه تلاشی برای بررسی واحدها و عبارتهای فراگفتمان شخصی است که در ژانرهای مختلف یافت می شود . براساس طبقه بندی ادل (2006) از نقشهای گفتمان مربوط به فراگفتمان شخصی و لیچ (2014) استراتژی اصل ادب ، سه ژانر گفتاری مختلف از نظر استفاده از نقشهای مختلف فراگفتمان شخصی و از سوی دیگر از نظر نشانه های اصل ادب مقایسه شدند. داده ها از سه ژانر متفاوت انتخاب شدند که عبارتند از: بحث آزاد در سیاست، مصاحبه با هنرپیشه ها و فیلم کمدی. تجزیه و تحلیل در این مطالعه بر اساس 30 رونوشت از داده های کلامی و فیلم ها مجموعا به تعداد 3،034،025 کلمه انجام شد. داده ها بصورت دستی آنالیز شدند. برای شناسایی فراگفتمان در ژانرها از معیارهای مدل ادل استفاده شد. بعد از بررسی تعداد فراگفتمانها در ژانرها مشخص شد که 19.6 درصد فراگفتمان در ژانر کمدی استفاده شده که در مقایسه با ژانرهای دیگر بیشتر بود. نتایج نشان داد که &واحدها/عبارتهای فراگفتمان شخصی سخنران گرا& در مصاحبه ها بیشتر از دو ژانر دیگر بیشتر بود. & واحدها/عبارتهای فراگفتمان شخصی شرکت کننده گرا& در بحث آزاد رایج تر بودند و & واحدها/عبارتهای فراگفتمان شخصی شنونده گرا& اغلب در کمدی ها استفاده می شدند. این یافته ها همچنین حاکی از آن است که واحدها/عبارتهای فراگفتمان شخصی متکلم محور در ژانر بحث آزاد از حداکثر اصل و نشانه های ادب استفاده می کنند. واحدها/عبارتهای فراگفتمان شخصی شرکت کننده گرا در ژانر مصاحبه از حداکثر اصل ادب برخوردار بودند. واحدها/عبارتهای فراگفتمان شخصی مبتنی بر شنونده در ژانر بحث آزاد از نظر تعداد از حداکثر نشانه های اصل ادب استفاده کردند. از طرف دیگر، مصاحبه کنندگان/صحبت کنندگان در ژانرها به علت نرم کردن و همسان سازی عقاید خود، حداکثر ماکسیم/نشانه &انکار افکار& را در عبارتهای فراگفتمانی خود در ژانرها به کار بردند. این مقاله یک مدلی را برای ارتباط دادن اصل ادب با فراگفتمان ارائه داده است.
