Textual Metadiscourse Resources in Res Earch Articles

This study was motivated by three factors. which alsocontribute to its significance for tcday' s academic writing. first,research articles are the significant means of communicationbetween the writers all over the world. second, persuasion andorganization are crucial notions in academic writing where theauthors have to consider the academic audiences and their needs.third, some writers are not the native speakers of english andwrite their research articles in english. despite their importancein academic writing, we know little about how textua lmetadiscourse resources (tmrs) are used in different disciplinesand genres. this study examines the use of tmrs in researcharticles of three disciplines of mechanical engineering (me),medicine (med). and applied linguistics (al). it also exploresdistribution of tmrs by native and non-native writers of englishin the research articles of three disciplines. based on a corpus ofthirty research articles, the frequency of tmrs was calculated per1.000 words. the findings of the study indicate a significantdifference in the distribution of tmrs in three disciplines andalso between the writings of native and non-native writers. inaddition, these findings may have soi,le implications for teachingdisciplinary communication especially to foreign languagelearners of english
