Comparison of Boric Acid with Clotrimazole in the Treatment of Recurrent or Resistant Vulvovaginitis Caused by Non-Albicans Species of Candida

Background: vulvovaginal candidias is is one of the mostcommon infections in gynecologic filed, and non-albicanscandida specie s are emerging causative microorganisms. thisspecie s shows resistance to routine treatments. one of thesuggested treatment s is admini stration of vaginal suppositoriesof boric acid. the aim of the present study was to compareboric acid with clotrimazole in the treatment of recurrent orresistant vulvovaginitis.methods: in a double-blind , randomized clinical trial, 90 nonpregnantwomen were enrolled . the patients were divided intotwo groups to receive ; boric acid (300 mg twice a day for 2weeks) or clotrimazole ( 100 mg once a day for 2 weeks) intravaginally. treatment responses were monitored by laboratoryand clinical data.results: treatment response s were significantly different inlaboratory resu its for boric acid and clotrimazo ie groups(86.7% v 60%, p= 0.004). clinical respons es (improved signsand symptoms) showed no significant differences (8.2. v 6.5,p= 0.02). drug side effe cts were not different in boric acid andclotrim azole groups (13.3% v 11.1%, p= 0.75).conclusion: intra-vaginal administration of boric acid is moreeffective than clotrimazole in vaginal candidias is caused bynon-albi cans species.
