   Factor Analysis of Metabolic Syndrome among Iranian Male Smokers

چکیده    Background: recent studies show cardiovascular disease(cvd) risk factors have the tendency to intermingle. integrationbetween some biological and homodynamic risk factorshave made the new hypothesis for etiology of cvds. the aimof this study was to determine the clustering pattern of metabolicvariables and left ventricular (lv) mass among smokerand non-smoker individuals and the interrelationship betweenthese risk factors.methods: 50 smokers and 50 non-smoker healthy males aged20 to 60 yrs participated in the study. after completing awho standard questionnaire regarding smoking habits, medicationsand history of other diseases, physical fitness, bloodpressure, fasting blood sugar, plasma insulin, total cholesterol,hdl, triglycerides and lipoprotein (a). a j2-lead electrocardiographyand echocardiography studies were done to determinethe lv mass.results: no significant differences were found betweensmokers or non-smokers in regard to the studied metabolicvariables except for lv mass (228.4(plus-minus)48.6 vs. 196.4(plus-minus)57.3 g;p(less than)0.05). the interrelationship of metabolic syndrome variablesand other cvd risk factors among smokers was greaterthan non-smokers (p(less than)0.05). in the factor analysis, three componentswere retained both for smokers and non-smokers. atotal of 59.5% of variance was explained in data for all subjects.conclusions: smoking has probably no relationship withcomponents of metabolic syndrome; however the correlationbetween these risk factors and other homodynamic measuresand lv mass was greater among smokers than non-smokers.no single factor can explain the clustering of the metabolicsyndrome among smokers.
