Methylene Blue Prevents Post-Surgical Adhesion Formation in the Rabbit

Peritoneal adhesions are challenging in abdominal surgery. inspite of different kinds of treatments still no definitive andeffective treatment is suggested. to determine the preventioneffects of intraperitoneal (ip) methylene blue in post surgicaladhesion formation 44 rabbits were randomly divided in twogroups of equal number. group i received an intra peritonealinjection of a i% suspension of methylene blue diluted withtalc powder, and group ii received ip injection of diluted talcpowder. five months later both rabbits of groups were evaluatedfor severity of adhesion. the mean scores for adhesionsfor groups i was o.9(plus-minus)o.88 which was significantly lower than3.72(plus-minus)1.32 for group ii (p(less than)o.05). it is therefore, concluded thatintraperitoneal administration of methylene blue decreases therate of post surgical adhesion formation in the rabbit.
