Comparison of Adenoidectomy and Myringotomy with and without Tube Placement in the Short Term Hearing Status of Children with Otitis Media with Effusion: A Preliminary Report

Background: otitis media with effusion (ome) is the mostfrequent indication for surgery in children. some surgeonsprefer to use adenoidectomy and myringotomy with tympauostoruytubes insertion to prevent the sequelae of the discaseand also more improvement of hearing. the aim of thisstudy is to compare adenoidectomy-myringotomy with adenoidcctumy-myringotorny plus tympanostomy tube in themanagement of ome.methods: thirty children with oms (age range 4-8 year)were randomly assigned to receive adenoidectomy withmyringotomy in one ear or adenoidectomy. myringotomy plusrympanostorny tube insertion in the other. the patients weresubjected to auditory examinations i and 6 months post operationto evaluate hearing levels.results: the results showed no significant difference in hearinglevel improvement between these two methods of surgery.conclusion: it is concluded that adenoidectomy with myringotomyis sufficient for management of otitis media with effusionin children in short term.
