چکیده    In recent years, great concern has been shown towards the increase in the emission of the main greenhouse gas - carbon dioxide (c02). many countries including malaysia are playing an active role in reducing c02 emissions by signing the united nations framework convention on climate change (unfcc) on june 9, 1993. electricity generation, transportation, industrial and residential are the main sectors identified to contribute to the emission of c02 in malaysia. in this study, a comprehensive modeling tool, long-range energy alternatives planning system (leap) was utilized to project c02 emissions for the period of 2000 to 2020 for each sector. leap, as a forecasting tool projected the increase of 88.97 tonnes of c02 being released into the atmosphere in 2000 to 285.73 million tonnes in 2020. in the same year, the largest emitting sector is electricity generation which gives 43.40% out of the total of emissions. in addition, this study also reviews mitigation options proposed by other researchers in order to provide an important basis to reduce future c02 emissions and their associated impact
