PNB and Shariah Compliant Hotel Management

Shariah compliant hotel is one of the halal sectors that increasingly gain the attention of muslim tourists as well as hoteliers. the increase in arrival of muslim tourists each year has contributed to the rising demand for the hotels which embrace “halalan tayyiban” concept. looking at its great potential, various institutions in malaysia have taken an initiative to involve in shariah compliant hotel sector. in this regard, permodalan nasional berhad (pnb) as a government-linked company which committed in islamic business transactions has introduced a hotel chain through its subsidiary. along with these commitments, the pnb hotel chain has been managed under the ms1900:2014 shariah-based quality management system certification. however, the question arise as to what extent do these hotels meet the criteria of shariah compliant hotel? this article attempts to address this issue by firstly, introducing the concept of a shariah compliant hotel, followed by shariah compliance analysis in pnb hotels. therefore, qualitative approaches that combine library methods, interviews and observations have been used in data collection involving three pnb hotels. all of these data have then been analyzed using content analysis according to relevant themes.throuhgout the study, it is found that pnb hotels have been committed in satisfying all shariah criteria. the hotels under the company have been certified by sirim and have individually appointed specific officers who are overseeing every aspect pertaining to halal management. these findings are significant as to show the steady development of islamic hotel industry and being a benchmark for the other industrial players.
