از تقارن در چهره تا تقارن در مدل‌های علمی: تبینی تکاملی-شناختی از اهمیت زیبایی و تقارن در علم

با اینکه دانشمندان زیادی از نقش والای زیبایی و تقارن در علم سخن گفته‌اند فیلسوفان علم تقریبا جایی برای زیباشناسی در علم قائل نبوده‌اند. در سال‌های اخیر شاهد توجه برخی فیلسوفان علم به نقش زیبایی و تقارن در علم بوده‌ایم. در نوشته‌ی حاضر ضمن اشاره به برخی از سخنان بزرگان علم درباره‌ی جایگاه زیبایی و تقارن در علم خواهیم دید که برخی آن را ملاکی بر صدق دانسته‌اند و برخی خیر. پرسشی که این مقاله به آن می‌پردازد این است که اصلاً علت روانشناختی توجه به زیبایی و تقارن در علم چیست. خواهیم دید که تشخیص تقارن در چهره نوعی سازگاری تکاملی است و محصول فرعی این توجه به تقارن آن است که در حیطه‌هایی خارج از دامنه‌ی سازگاری نیز این گرایش گسترش یافته است. سپس نشان داده می‌شود که در نقاشی‌های چهره، هنرمند به نحوی از انحاء از ملاک‌های زیستی زیبایی چهره گذر می‌کند. بنابراین امکان گذر از سطح زیستی وجود دارد. دعوی آخر مقاله آن است که هرچند جست‌وجوی زیبایی و تقارن انگیزه‌ای برای کار علمی است اما ممکن است مانعی در رسیدن به صدق باشد. و اگر هنرمندان موفق به گذار از آن چه زیست‌شناسی ذهن‌شان به آنها دیکته می‌کند شده‌اند دانشمندان نیز می‌توانند چنین کنند.

from facial symmetry to the symmetry in scientific models: an evolutionary-cognitive account of aesthetics in science

while the significance of beauty and symmetry in science has been a recurring theme in the discourse of many eminent scientists, the philosophical contemplation of aesthetics within the philosophy of science has garnered attention only in recent years. this paper examines the perspectives of renowned scientists on the role of beauty and symmetry, revealing a spectrum of views where beauty is variously seen as a hallmark of truth or regarded with skepticism. we propose a psychological explanation for the scientific preoccupation with beauty and symmetry, suggesting that the human ability to recognize facial symmetry is an evolutionary adaptation. this adaptation’s byproduct, we argue, is the inclination to appreciate symmetry in domains beyond the original adaptive purpose. furthermore, the paper explores how portraiture often deviates from biological standards of beauty, indicating a potential to transcend biological predispositions. the final assertion posits that while the pursuit of beauty and symmetry can drive scientific inquiry, it may also impede the attainment of truth. drawing parallels with artists who have transcended their biological inclinations, we suggest that scientists, too, might overcome these aesthetic biases.
