سیر تحول مفهوم تطهیر در دین هندویی

در هند عصر ودایی، عمل تطهیر ابتدا به صورت مناسک و طی تشریفاتی آیینی انجام می گرفته است. رفته رفته با پیدایش بارقه هایی از درونگرایی در فرهنگ دینی هند، مفهوم پاکی در تفکر هندی به ساحت ذهن و نفس راه یافت و به عنوان یک فضیلت اخلاقی شناخته شد؛ به طوری که می بینیم در اوپَنیشدها ضرورت اجرای مناسکِ تطهیر در درجۀ دوم اهمیت، و پاکی باطنی و صفای نفس در درجۀ نخست قرار می گیرد. با پیدایش نگرشی منفی نسبت به تن آدمی آن‌چنان که در اوپَنیشدهای متاخر مشهود است، می بینیم که از اهمیت مفهوم تطهیر نیز کاسته می شود. تا این‌که بار دیگر در متن قوانین منو جنبه های آیینی و جسمانیِ آن مورد تاکید قرار گرفت. بدین ترتیب، مفهوم پاکی درآیین هندویی نهایتاً بر یک امر وجودی که به هر دو ساحت جسم و روح آدمی نظر دارد، دلالت یافت.

In the Vedic period, the act of purification was treated as a rite performed through the ritual ceremonies. Gradually, with the emergence and development of introversion attitude in Hindu culture, the concept of purity in Hindu thought entered the realm of mind and found a new dimension as a moral virtue. As seen in the Upanishads, within this new phase, the necessity of performing rituals for purification stood as a secondrated priority, while the concepts of inner purity and selfrefinement occupied the first place among Hindu concerns. With the emergence of negative attitude towards human body as observed in later Upanishads, the concept of purification, which had now taken also a sanitary dimension, became less and less important. Nevertheless, in The Laws of Manu, one can observe anew emphasis on the ritualistic and bodily aspects of purification. Therefore, the concept of purity in Hinduism eventually became regarded as an existential state of being, related to both body and spirit.
