اسپهبد، از ممدوحان منوچهری دامغانی

منوچهری دامغانی که از سرایندگان برجستۀ سدۀ پنجم هجری است، برای یافتن ممدوحی که او را و شعرش را آن‌طور که او می‌خواهد، پاس بدارد، بارها از این دیار بدان دیار نقل مکان کرده، به دربارهای مختلف پیوسته و ممدوحان گوناگونی را مدح گفته است، ممدوحانی از قلمرو کومس، گرگان، ری و دربار غزنویان. یکی از این ممدوحان کسی است که شاعر او را در شعرش «اسپهبد» خطاب کرده است. برخی این اسپهبد را همان منوچهر بن قابوس، پادشاه زیاری که در گرگان حکمرانی می‌کرده، دانسته‌اند و برخی دیگر او را اسپهبدی از اسپهبدان شمال ایران و جز از زیاریان شمرده‌اند. در نوشتۀ پیش رو، نگارنده کوشیده است تا حد امکان و به‌پشتیِ اشعار منوچهری و نیز بر اساس دیگر منابعی که در دست است، اطلاعاتی از بعضی اسپهبدان شمال ایران به دست دهد که ممکن است همان ممدوح منوچهری باشند.
