Abstract    in recent years, optical vortices, as beams with a helical wave structure and unique phase characteristics, have attracted significant attention in the fields of optics and emerging technologies. in this study, the generation of optical vortices through the diffraction of gaussian beams by fork‑shaped gratings is investigated, and an accurate analytical model is presented for extracting the radius of the vortex dark region. this model is founded on theoretical analyses employing the jacobi–anger expansion and fourier transform in the fraunhofer approximation, and explicitly derives a quantitative relationship between the topological charge and the vortex radius. to validate the theoretical model, numerical simulations and experiments carried out using a helium–neon laser and a spatial light modulator to provide the supporting evidence. the results demonstrate that the proposed model can predict variations in the vortex radius with high accuracy. this approach can contribute to the optimal design of optical systems in areas such as optical micromanipulation, optical communications, and laser processing, which can provide a foundation for the development of more advanced models in future research.
