Abstract
this research examines iranian leftist historiography, specifically its interpretations of nation and nationalism, two of the most challenging concepts in contemporary political and social discourse. using braun and clarke's comparative thematic analysis method, thirteen historical texts from nine prominent iranian leftist historians were analyzed, selected through theoretical sampling. the analysis identified twelve main themes and two sub-themes. a comparative study of these themes, in light of the research's theoretical findings, revealed two distinct historiographical approaches within the iranian left: 1- orthodox left historiography, 2- neo marxist left historiography. furthermore, dividing the extracted themes into two thematic groups highlighted two overarching historical perspectives: a) iranian feudalism, b) iranian despotism. the findings show that the orthodox approach narrates iranian history primarily through the lens of iranian feudalism, while the neo-marxist approach—a more recent perspective—interprets iran's historical trajectory as a transhistorical structure centered on iranian despotism. regarding the core research question, the results indicate that there is no unified stance on nation and nationalism within iranian leftist historiography. the orthodox tradition largely remains silent on these concepts, while the neo-marxist tradition actively engages with them at both societal and state levels. at the societal level, the nation is viewed through a class-based structure, often in opposition to the state, particularly during periods of struggle (e.g., revolutions or movements). conversely, at the state level, the nation is portrayed as part of an authoritarian structure, reflecting a marxist oppressive nation. additionally, nationalism is interpreted as an ideological tool functioning at both mass and state levels. while mass nationalism is often framed positively, state nationalism is characterized asauthoritarian and despotic.
