   The Combating Obesity in Maori and Pasifi ka Adolescent School-children Study: COMPASS Methodology and Study Protocol

چکیده    Background: lifestyle modifi cations including, physical activity canreduce obesity-related morbidity and subsequent cardiovascular diseasein youth. this study will investigate the effi cacy of a culturally-sensitive,non-contact, boxing-orientated training program on obesity and relatedcardio-metabolic conditions in m?ori and pasifi ka adolescents. detailsof the methodological aspects of recruitment, inclusion criteria,randomization, cultural sensitivity, intervention program, assessments,process evaluation, and statistical analyses are described.methods: this study will be a community based, new zealand,randomized control trial (rct). male and female obese (body massindex > 95th percentile) m?ori and pasifi ka adolescents aged 14-16 yearswill be recruited and the sample size will be confi rmed through afeasibility study. combating obesity in m?ori and pasifi ka adolescentschool-children study (compass) is a 6-month, theory-basedprogram, conducted 3-times/week in a culturally appropriate setting. eachsession includes 40 min boxing-orientated training and 30 min resistancetraining. assessments will be made at baseline, 3-months, 6-months,12-months, and 24-months. main outcomes include abdominal obesity,endothelial function, and insulin resistance. other outcomes includearterial stiffness, lipid profi le, infl ammatory biomarkers, well-being, andaerobic fi tness. control measures include physical activity, sleep behavior,and dietary intake. analysis will be done by intention to treatresults: as a protocol paper there are no specific results topresent, our purpose is to share our rct design with the scientificcommunity.conclusions: compass will be used to provide directionfor exercise prescription policy in at-risk m?ori and pasifikaadolescents.
