بیدل دهلوی تحت تاثیر آموزه‌های عرفانی شیخ نظام‌الدین اولیاء است و از این جهت توجه به دین و عرفان در شعر او نمود دارد و اشعارش مملو از مفاهیم و ارزش‌های اخلاقی – انسانی است. ضمن اینکه او به عنوان یک شاعر آزاده و منتقد رفتارهای دین‌باوران را آسیب‌شناسی کرده است و با نقد آن رفتارها حتی ریاستیز و منتقدی صریح‌اللهجه‌ نامیده شده است، او کوشیده حقیقت دینی و حیات را از رهگذر اندیشه‌ای آزاد کشف کند و آنانکه دین را وسیلة ریا قرارداده‌اند و جمعی را به خود مشغول نموده و بازار ریاکاریشان گرم است و در نظر مردم محبوب و گاه مقبولند عوام فریبی شان را برملاسازد و مهم‌تر آنکه او از نظر بنیاد اندیشه و فهم هستی، جهان او، جهانی دینی است و از دریچة دین و فهم دینی به جهان نگریسته و زندگانی را معنا نموده و سخنانش می‌تواند راهگشای معنوی برای انسان که در این عصر اسیر تمدن مادی و ماشینی است باشد و آن پیش گرفتن راه عشق و عرفان و فضایل اخلاقی است.
