ویژگی‌های تصوف و عرفان اسلامی‌ در حیات عملی و نظری توماس مرتن

توماس مرتن در سال 1959 با اسلام و آموزه های دینی آن آشنا شد؛ مواجهه او با اسلام از طرق متعددی شکل گرفته است. زمانی که مرتن با مسلمانان و دانشجویان اسلامی ارتباط برقرارکرد، زمانی از حیاتش بود که عرفان و حیاتِ روحانی برایش پررنگ ترین دغدغه های ذهنی به شمارمی آمدند. او با مطالعه اشعار صوفیانه با آثارِ شوان[1] و گنون[2] آشنا شده بود؛ تاثیرگذارترین شخص در آشنایی مرتن با اسلام شخصی به نام لویی ماسینیون بود. توماس مرتن در سال‌‌های پایانی دهه 50 با اسلام و آموزه‌‌های آن آشنایی یافت؛ آشنایی و مواجهه‌‌ وی با اسلام از طرق متعددی شکل گرفته است. از این راه‌‌های آشنایی مرتن می‌‌توان به مواجهه و مطالعه‌‌ متون اصلی دین اسلام از جمله قرآن و همچنین دیدار و مکاتبه با شخصیت‌‌های مسلمان (صوفی) در طول حیاتش اشاره نمود. مرتن تاثیرات زیادی از اسلام پذیرفت و آشنایی او با اسلام در غنابخشی اندیشه‌‌های دینی و عارفانه‌‌اش نقش بسزایی داشته است؛ از مهم‌‌ترین تعالیم تصوف که مرتن آن را اخذکرده است می‌‌توان به این آموزه اشاره نمود که تمامی انسان‌‌ها می‌‌توانند با دنبال کردن ایمان و اعتقادات خویش و نگریستن در نشانه‌‌های شخصی خداوند در هرچیزی به شناخت خدا و علم به او دست یابند.
