Identifying the layers of hadith texts and extracting the older layers out of later texts, is one of the modern research methods welcomed by islamic researchers in the recent decades. this task has also been hailed by the researchers in the shi‘a scholastic community so that a number of old shi‘a texts have been retrieved or reconstructed. however, this modern approach in its theoretical and conceptual field has certain defects, among which is lack of analysis concerning the fundamentals and principles governing the process of retrieval. by presenting practical strategies, this study ,thus, attempts to discuss the scientific aspects of retrieval, and to analyze and explain the fundamentals and methods of retrieving the old hadith texts by applying them on zayd b. wahb’s book.keywords: old hadith texts, retrieval fundamentals, retrieval methods, zayd b. wahb’s book.--
