Abstract
in the study of arabic lexicography, &contronyms& (words with opposing meanings) have held particular significance among linguists, leading to the compilation of numerous works on the subject. given that these terms semantically evolve to encompass two contradictory meanings, identifying their original meaning and tracing their semantic development is crucial for accurate interpretation. one such contronym is the word &qurʾ& (قُرء), which carries the opposing meanings of &menstruation (ḥayḍ)& and &purity (ṭuhr)&. it appears once in the quran (in its plural form, qurūʾ) in verse 228 of surah al-baqarah. since existing research on contronyms has seldom employed methods from historical linguistics, this study investigates the root &q-r-ʾ& through the lens of historical-comparative linguistics across afro-asiatic and indo-european languages. through etymological analysis and semantic reconstruction, it is demonstrated that the primary meaning of &qurʾ& was &to call or gather&, with contextual usage leading to the derived meaning of &facing/encountering&. over time, because women would &encounter& this physiological phenomenon (menstruation) during their cycles, the term came to denote &ḥayḍ& (menstruation). thus, the original and primary meaning of &qurʾ& as a contronym is &menstruation&, while its later semantic shift led to its usage for &purity (ṭuhr)&.
