the representation of self-relation metaphors in alavi discourse (a linguistic approach)

Authors nazari razieh ,mirhosseini yahya
Abstract    the term nafs (self) comprises psychological phenomena pertaining to both the inner and outer dimensions of human existence. from a cognitive linguistic perspective, the distinction between &agent& and &self& forms the overarching structure of the metaphorical system governing human self-relations. this study seeks to represent the governing values of imam ali’s (as) ideological framework by examining different types of human-self relations in his discourse through library research, a descriptive-analytical method, and cognitive linguistic and sociological approaches, ultimately deriving an ideal model of self-relation. the analyzed dataset consists of 190 narrations from nahj al-balagha containing the term nafs, with the most prominent ones relevant to the topic selected for discussion. the study employs a model derived from mapping social relations—based on lakoff and johnson’s theory of embodied mind philosophy concerning metaphors of human inner life—onto patterns of social interaction. findings indicate that the human agent and the self are conceptualized within the domains of parent-child relations, self-care, conflict, and adaptation, framed through the conceptual metaphors of body, living being, space, and obstacle. in the parental relationship, the human agent acts as an educator. self-care relations lay the groundwork for self-improvement. conflict, meanwhile, encompasses various relational dynamics, including approach, approach-avoidance, and avoidance. in adaptive relations, represented through the agent’s direct and indirect exercise of authority, the focus is on the cohesion between the self and the human agent regarding divine command—namely, submission. thus, the adaptive relationship emerges as the ideal model of human-self relations.
