Abstract
verbal communication, which dates back to the dawn of humanity, has been a focal point in the teachings of divine prophets. in the process of persuading their opponents and proving their truthfulness, they sought to utilize this potential. in the quranic texts, the dialogue between prophet moses (as) and pharaoh represents a confrontation between two ideologies, two creeds, and two opposing worldviews, warranting analysis from the perspective of linguistic pragmatics. one dimension of examining this dialogue is analyzing the discourse of each party through the lens of &presupposition&—a non-linguistic shared knowledge or assumption, which is an essential element in pragmatics for establishing any effective communication. various theorists have identified triggers of presupposition, among whom george yule is one of the most significant. given the importance and relevance of yule’s theory in discourse analysis—and considering that his presupposition theory is one of the most adaptable frameworks for dialogue—this research employs a descriptive-analytical method, supported by statistical data, to analyze presupposition techniques in the dialogue between prophet moses (as) and pharaoh. the study first elaborates on yule’s theory, then examines selected verses from surah al-a’raf, ash-shu’ara, ta-ha, and ghafir—which contain the dialogue between moses (as) and pharaoh—from this perspective. the findings indicate that in prophet moses’ (as) speech, existential presupposition (with a frequency of 59%) predominates over other types, demonstrating his emphasis on common knowledge with pharaoh. by articulating divine attributes and leveraging this common ground, moses (as) sought to establish the existence of the lord of the worlds. in contrast, pharaoh’s discourse exhibits a higher frequency of structural presupposition (39%), as he consistently attempted to delegitimize moses’ (as) message and undermine his character to neutralize the innate truth in his words.
