Abstract
the classification of methods for transmitting and narrating hadith in the early islamic centuries led to the development of biographical catalogs (rijāl) and scholarly records. one of the most influential figures in al-rijāl by al-najashi—the most important shiite biographical work on hadith transmission chains—is hasan ibn hamzah alawi. his earliest recorded hadith audition (samāʿ) dates back to 300 ah in tabaristan. subsequently, until 312 ah, he traveled to ray and qom to transmit, hear, and study hadith. during his pilgrimage journeys to khorasan, iraq, and the hejaz in 328 and 356 ah, he both received and relayed hadith narrations. an analysis of the transmission chains (asānīd) documented by al-najashi and al-tusi reveals that hasan ibn hamzah primarily acquired the books of the imams’ narrators in qom from ibn buṭṭah and ali ibn ibrahim al-qummi. the findings of this study indicate that, unlike in the 3rd century, the circulation of hadith documents in the 4th century shifted from iran to iraq, specifically from qom and rayy to kufa and baghdad. thus, in the 4th century, hadith scholars from kufa, rayy, qom, and eventually baghdad played key roles in the evolution of hadith transmission—acting as transmitters, consolidators, and editors—bridging the tradition into the 5th century.
