Abstract
the selection of any exegetical foundation leads to the adoption of specific interpretive methods and rules. consequently, exegetes often choose different interpretive approaches based on their theological perspectives and principles, resulting in distinct—and sometimes conflicting—interpretations. one such debated issue is the interpretation of creation (khāliqiyyah) in relation to beings other than god. adhering to either side of this debate has significant implications, even leading to the formation of different theological schools. among the views of scholars, sometimes true creativity is attributed to beings other than god, while at other times, it is ascribed metaphorically. in this study, using a descriptive-analytical method, we examine the theological principles of shi’a scholars and adopt a foundational principle based on which we interpret the verse: anni akhluqu lakum minaṭ-ṭīni kahay’atiṭ-ṭayr (āl- ‘imrān 3:49, i create for you out of clay the likeness of a bird”). by considering shi’a theological principles—including the ontological contingency and existential dependence of composite beings (non-abstract entities), the incapacity of contingent beings to create, and the exclusivity of independent efficient causality to god—we conclude that if creation is understood in its true sense (i.e., creatio ex nihilo), then such an act must be instantaneous and cannot be attributed to two independent agents or creators. therefore, according to shi’a interpretation, true creativity is an exclusive act of god, and its attribution to others is merely metaphorical.
