A critique on mas‘?d?’s account about the iranians regard tok‘abah in pre-islamic periods. h. mahdikhani sarvijahani1ph.d student, department of history & civilization of islamicnations, science and research branch, islamic azad university,tehran, iranabu’al-hasan ‘al? ibn husayn mas‘?d? (d. 345 ah), provided a reportin his two well-known works (mur?j al-dhahab and al-tanb?hwa’lishr?f),indicates that the ancient iranians, including s?s?n ibn b?bak,went to ka‘bah to make a pilgrimage and carried gifts. according tothis story, name of zamzam well is derived from the persian wordzamzam-means whisper. the present study examines significantpoints of masudi’s narrative and compares it with those from othersources on history of iran and mecca in pre- islamic period. it isconcluded that the report about the iranians regard to k‘abah in pre-islamic period had not been mentioned in the works from otherhistorians before mas‘?d? and also those who wrote about historyfrom a critical point of view after him. therefore, the aforementionednarrative is not common and valid and probably emanated fromsho‘?b?s inislamic era.keywords: mas‘?d?, iranians and arabs, s?s?n, k‘abah and zamzam.1. email: s.h.mahdikhani@gmail.com
