دولت دموکراتیک مورد حمایت غرب در افغانستان، پس خروج نیروهای خارجی از این کشور، دچار فروپاشی شد و جنبش طالبان توانست مجددا قدرت را تصاحب کند. این سطح از بی ثباتی و حتی بیش آن در تاریخ افغانستان مدرن، همواره بخشی از زندگی مردم این کشور بوده است. عوامل مختلفی در پژوهش ها همچون شکافهای اجتماعی و مداخله قدزتهای خارجی به عنوان دلیل اصلی این وضعیت مورد توجه قرار داشته اند. با این حال انگاره دولت-ملت در چارچوب نظام بین الملل معاصر تنها ایده ای است که از زمان استقلال تاکنون ایده محوری برای تشکیل نظام سیاسی و ایجاد ثبات در این کشور بوده است. فهم مردم افغانستان از نظام بین الملل و دولت-ملت به عنوان بازیگر انحصاری آن، زمینه تحقق ثبات در چارچوب چنین ساختاری را بسیار دشوار ساخته است. تحلیل این سطح از اثرگذاری عوامل معناگرایانه در چارچوب نظریه سازه انگاری قابل توضیح است و همچنین فهم نقش اساسی استعمار در این میان با کمک نظریه پسااستعماری امکان پذیر خواهد بود.
