برهان فرا- استقرای بدبینانه و واقع‌گرایی علمی: رویکردهای ارجاعی

واقع‌گرایان علمی با برهان «معجزه نیست» (nm) استدلال می‌ورزند که موفقیت علوم در پیش‌بینی و توضیح بسیار مشکل، و حتی غیرممکن می‌بود، چنانچه نظریه‌های علمی صادق نبودند و هستومندهای (مشاهده‌ناپذیر) پیشنهادی آنها وجود نداشتند. درمقابل، لائودن با برهان «فرا-استقرای بدبینانه» (pmi) و با ارائۀ فهرستی از نظریه‌های موفق و درعین‌حال کاذبِ گذشته، ادعا می‌کند موفقیت یک نظریه در توضیح و پیش‌بینی ملازم با صدق آن نیست. در پاسخ، مبتنی بر رویکرد ارجاعی، واقع‌گرایان تلاش کرده‌اند نشان دهند ترم‌های نظریه‌های موفقِ گذشته به مصداق‌های خود ارجاع می‌دادند و هستومندهایی که پیش نهاده بودند، به‌نوعی در عالم وجود دارند. به‌علاوه، این ترم‌های ارجاعی و مصادیق موردنظر آنها به‌نوعی در نظریه‌های متوالی بعدی نیز حفظ شده‌اند. در این مقاله، پس از توضیح nm و pmi، با بررسی و نقد مهم‌ترین استدلال‌های واقع‌گرایان در رد pmi که همگی ذیل رویکرد ارجاعی قرار دارند، نشان داده می‌شود که هیچ‌کدام از این استدلال‌ها‌ توان رد برهان pmi به‌شکلی فیصله‌بخش را ندارند. بااین‌حال، در پایان مقاله اشاره خواهد شد که مزیت رویکرد ارجاعی این است که به واقع‌گرایان اجازه می‌د‌هد حتی با فرض ناتوانی در رد برهان pmi، از خوانش متواضعانه‌تری از واقع‌گرایی، موسوم به «واقع‌گرایی وجودی» دفاع کنند.

the pessimistic meta-induction argument and scientific realism: the referential approaches

according to the “no miracle argument” (nm), the predictive and explanatory success of science would be difficult, if not impossible, to explain unless mature scientific theories were approximately true, and the theoretical entities postulated by them exist. on the contrary, in his version of “the pessimistic meta-induction argument” (pmi), laudan, by providing a list of past successful and yet false theories, rejects any relationship between success of a theory and its truth. in response to laudan, based on the referential approach, realists have tried to show that the central terms of many past successful theories refer after all, and their postulated entities do exist. moreover, theses terms and their referents have been preserved in the successive theories. in this paper, first, nm and pmi will be explained. then, the most important realists’ solutions to pmi in the referential approach will be evaluated critically. it will be shown that none of these solutions can rebut pmi conclusively. in the final part of the paper, however, it will be explained briefly that even if realists could not rebut the pmi challenge, the advantage of the referential approach is that still allows them to save a weak version of scientific realism, entitled “existential realism”.
