نسبیت خاص علیه استدلال مک‌تاگارت

مک‌تاگارت استدلال کرده است که هر تلاشی برای ارائۀ توصیفِ ریاضیِ سازگاری از گذر زمان، محکوم به شکست است. پیچیده‌ترکردن زمان دستوری جملات، تناقض را برطرف نمی‌کند؛ بلکه صرفاً آن را از لایه‌ای به لایۀ دیگر منتقل می‌کند. در این پژوهش، استدلال خواهد شد که می‌توان از بروز تناقض لایه‌لایه در استدلال مک‌تاگارت علیه واقعی‌بودن زمان اجتناب کرد. کافیست سمانتیکی برای پرداختن به عبارات زمان‌دار و یک ترتیب‌گذاری بر صدق آنها در اختیار قرار گیرد. همچنین، استدلال خواهد شد تمایزی، از نوعی که مک‌تاگارت انتظارش را داشت، میان سری‌های الف و ب وجود ندارد. وجود سری الف مستلزم وجود سری ب است. درنهایت متناظرهای نسبیتی سری‌های مک‌تاگارت معرفی خواهند شد و بحث خواهد شد که فضازمان مینکوفسکی برای ساخت مدل سمانتیکی موردنیاز فریمی فراهم می‌آورد برای پرداختن به عبارات زمان‌دار؛ به‌نحوی‌که در آن از بروز تناقض مک‌تاگارتی اجتناب می‌شود. بدین‌ترتیب، نشان داده می‌شود که در مدلی که نسبیت خاص برای توصیف زمان ارائه می‌کند، برخی از مقدمات استدلال مک‌تاگارت کاذب‌اند و درنتیجه استدلال او صحیح نیست.

Special Relativity against McTaggart’s argument on the unreality of time

McTaggart has argued that any attempt to obtain a consistent mathematical description of the passage of time is doomed to failure: complicating tenses does not eliminate contradiction, rather pushes it back to a more complicated tensed expression. I will argue that one could avoid the hierarchical contradictions in McTaggart’s argument against the reality of time: it would be enough to use appropriate semantic models for dealing with tensed sentences, and for placing an order which determines their sequence of truth. Then, I would also argue that there is no meaningful distinction between McTaggart’s A and B series, and that the A series requires the B series. Finally, I will introduce the special relativistic correspondence of the McTaggart’s series, and argue that Minkowski spacetime provides us the frame for constructing the semantic model needed to address temporal expressions in a way that avoids McTaggart’s contradictions. Thus it is shown that in the special relativistic description of time, i.e. the Minkowskian model, some of the premises of McTaggart’s argument are false; As a result, his argument is not sound.
