The success of hydroxyapatite (ha) ceramic in biomedical application is largely dependent on the availability of a high quality,sintered ha that is characterized having refined microstructure and improved mechanical properties. ha powders used in this work were obtained through wet chemical method and the green samples were cold-isostatically pressed. this leads to the investigation of the sinterability of hydroxyapatite in terms of phase stability,bulk density,young’ modules and vickers hardness over the temperature range of 1050 °c to 1350 °c after undergoing pre-heat treatment (700 °c to 1000 °c) through conventional pressure less sintering furnace (lt furnace). the results indicated that pre-heat treatment of the ha powder prior to sintering has negligible effect on the sinterability of the ha compacts (up to 900 °c). however,the sinterability of ha was found to be detrimental from the preheated treatment at 1000 °c and above. © school of engineering,taylor’s university.
